9'9 #3, 10'3 #3 & 10'3 #4 Compared
Following our first test dedicated to the 10'9 models, it is time to take a closer look at the other Vision Nymphmaniac Twintip rods introduced at the beginning of last year. Today's review focuses on the shorter-length range, featuring one 9'9 model and two 10'3 versions.
CONTENTS:
1. MEASUREMENT ANALYSIS
The Common Cents System protocol was used to characterise the power and action of these three rods.
1.1. POWER
In terms of power, 29, 26 and 30 cents were required to bend these three rods by one third of their respective lengths. After conversion, this results in an ERN of 3.27 for the 9'9 #3, 2.82 for the 10'3 #3, and 3.42 for the 10'3 #4. The 9'9 is therefore the only model whose actual power matches its stated line rating (#3). Both 10'3 models are overrated: the 10'3 #3 is in reality a #2/3, while the 10'3 #4 is effectively a #3.
1.2. ACTION
With an identical AA of 66°, all three rods feature a moderate-fast action, corresponding to an Action Angle between 63° and 66°.
1.3. BUILD QUALITY
Just like the 10'9 models discussed in our previous review, all three rods are supplied with two tips of different powers. The softer version is designated "Sensi" and can be identified by its green wrap, while the stiffer option is referred to as "Power". Repeated measurements conducted with both tips showed no change in overall rod power, which depends primarily on the three lower sections. Changing the tip therefore does not fundamentally alter the rod's dynamic characteristics; rather, it provides a subtle adjustment to its casting behaviour.
In terms of construction, these rods incorporate all the hallmarks of modern tight-line nymphing rods: a down-locking reel seat, fighting butt, and other familiar features. The main difference between the 9'9 and the 10'3 models lies in the position of the first guide. On the longer 10'3 rods, the stripping guide is positioned 26 cm from the grip, a classic tight-line nymphing configuration that helps prevent line sag when fishing with a high rod position. By contrast, the first guide on the 9'9 sits 49 cm from the grip. When tight-line nymphing with this model, a dedicated monofilament setup is therefore preferable to a fly line, which would tend to drop through the guides during the drift.
Several specific design features are worth highlighting on these Nymphmaniac rods:
- As is customary within this series, the guide count is relatively high, with 15 guides on the 10'3 models. The penultimate guide is a snake guide, intended to reduce tangles around the tip section.
- The grip dimensions are somewhat unconventional: it is slim at 22 mm and relatively long at 180 mm. This may prevent anglers using semi-automatic reels from keeping their ring finger on the trigger while fishing. To do so, they will need to position their hand lower on the grip or adjust their hand position when operating the trigger. Buyers can choose between EVA foam or cork when purchasing the rod.
In terms of finishing details, the rods feature a hook keeper but no section alignment dots. All Nymphmaniac models are equipped with fish-measuring marks at 20, 30, 40 and 50 cm.
1.4. FISHING COMFORT
Thanks to their long grips combined with down-locking reel seats, these rods offer excellent balance. For example, the PTE of the Nymphmaniac 10'3 #3 is approximately 25 grams lower than that of the Guideline Elevation Nymph 10'2. The PTE of the 10'3 #4 is comparable to that of the Thomas & Thomas Zone 10'2 #3.
These Nymphmaniac rods achieve optimal balance with an empty reel weighing around 100 grams or slightly less.
2. EDITORIAL VERDICT
While current trends in tight-line nymphing increasingly favour rods longer than 10'6, many anglers still look for versatile tools capable of handling both dry-fly fishing and Euro nymphing effectively. This is precisely the role filled by rods between 9'6 and 10'6, including the models featured in this review.
The new Nymphmaniac Twintip 9'9, with its true #3 power, is primarily designed for refined dry-fly fishing, as evidenced by the relatively distant position of the stripping guide. Paired with a #3 fly line, it excels on small and medium-sized rivers. If your fishing consists roughly of 80% dry fly and 20% tight-line nymphing, this model is an excellent choice. Anglers wishing to fish dedicated Euro-nymph leaders will benefit from loading their reel with monofilament only, perhaps by carrying a spare spool, as even ultra-thin fly lines would tend to sag through the guides due to their spacing. Its genuine #3 power allows it to cast a broad range of nymph weights, while the moderate-fast action helps minimise break-offs and lost fish.
The two 10'3 models, meanwhile, feature a more nymphing-oriented guide layout, with the stripping guide positioned close to the grip. Looking at their actual power ratings, the 10'3 #3—which is effectively a #2/3—is the archetypal rod for delicate tight-line nymphing presentations on smaller rivers. Its moderate-fast action produces a very progressive bend profile, making it possible to fish exceptionally fine tippet diameters, even below 0.10 mm.
The 10'3 #4, which in reality corresponds to a #3, is the most versatile rod of the group. It is particularly well suited to anglers whose fishing consists of roughly 60% tight-line nymphing and 40% dry-fly fishing with a #3 line on small to medium-sized rivers.
