ESSENTIAL WADERS FROM HOTFLY

Within the gear of the modern angler, waders have become an essential piece of equipment. However, many anglers are still reluctant to invest large sums in this product, as the price is often disconnected from actual durability. Over the past season, we put the ESSENTIAL wader model from Hotfly, offering an excellent price-performance ratio, to the test—and it met all our expectations:
1. STATIC TEST
The standout feature of these waders is that they benefit from the same fabric assembly process as higher-end Hotfly models: no more seams—the panels are joined using a patented thermo-welding system that has built the reputation of Hotfly waders. The fabric material is also identical (breathable microfiber made in Japan), as are its technical specifications (waterproof rating > 30,000 mm water column, breathability > 7,000 g/m²/24h).
The main differences compared to the high-end Alpine Diver V3 and Passion V2 lie in the number of fabric layers (4 layers for this Essential versus 5 for the Alpine Diver) and the more limited number of pockets and accessories—explaining the competitive price point of the Essential.
2. POCKETS & STORAGE
As the name suggests, the Essential features a very clean and minimalist design. It offers:
- 1 large external pocket with a water-resistant zipper suitable for moderate exposure (such as rain),
- 1 removable, waterproof and touchscreen-compatible internal pocket (for a phone or keys, for example).

3. ACCESSORIES
In terms of accessories, there are two D-rings located on the suspenders, which can be used to attach tools or support a wading chest pack, for example.
Other notable technical features of this product include:
- gravel guards made from the same material as the waders and equipped with a hook to attach to the laces,
- neoprene booties that have evolved significantly since the first Hotfly waders (once again highlighting the strong feedback culture of Markus Heiss and his team at 1000flies): the latest version features a 4 mm thickness and is designed to be far more durable than its predecessors.
Like the Alpine Diver and Passion models, these Hotfly Essential waders feature a relatively close-to-body fit (a so-called “European cut,” not overly wide and slightly higher to facilitate long strides).
Note: please consult the 1000flies website to choose the correct size, and don’t hesitate to send your measurements via email to receive advice before purchasing.

4. EDITORIAL OPINION
As you know, at Truites & Cie we have been impressed from the very beginning by the seam-free construction process used in Hotfly waders, the Italian brand behind these waders. Durability has always been our primary selection criterion. Many members of our editorial team spend more than a hundred days a year on the water, which means their gear is pushed to the limit (and their feedback from the water is something you can truly rely on!).
While for many anglers a pair of waders may seem like just a piece of fabric, their role is actually central to achieving both comfort and efficiency while fishing. As a result, many anglers primarily look for the best balance between price and durability—even if it means sacrificing a few features and adjustment options. In terms of design, one effective way to keep costs down without compromising reliability is to strip products back to the essentials, especially when it comes to accessories.
Free from unnecessary extras, this new Hotfly product fully embraces that philosophy. Its reliability did not falter during our fishing sessions, and it retains what defines the entire range: a very high-quality fabric.
At around €300, it directly competes with the Vision KOSKI—another well-designed product distributed by the online shop 1000flies.
As with waders and fly rods alike, we welcome every initiative that aims to offer affordable products to dedicated anglers working within a limited budget. And continuing in that direction, we’ll soon be talking about a new wader repair service that has just launched in France along the Dordogne—stay tuned!
