LL FLY LINES - LEVEL LINES
Level fly line – extremely light, ultra-thin and perfect for modern nymph fishing
LL fly lines, also known as level lines, are specifically designed for modern nymph fishing (Euro nymphing). Unlike classic fly lines, they have no taper profile, but instead feature a uniform diameter along their entire length. This makes them extremely light and very thin, allowing for direct contact with the nymph without interference from the line’s own weight. In modern nymph fishing, casting weight in the fly line is not required – what really matters are control, sensitivity and a clean, controlled drift. This is exactly where LL fly lines excel. They allow for highly precise nymph control and immediate bite detection. In this category, you’ll find LL fly lines developed specifically for these demands – for maximum control on the water.
LL FLY LINE (LEVEL LINE):
A SPECIALIST FOR MODERN NYMPH FISHING
An LL fly line, also referred to as a level line, is a highly specialised tool for modern nymph fishing. Unlike WF or DT fly lines, it has no taper and features a uniform diameter throughout. The goal of this design is not casting distance, but maximum sensitivity, direct contact and absolute control over the nymph.
Since in Euro nymphing the nymphs are not cast using the weight of the fly line, excessive line mass would actually be a disadvantage, as any resulting line sag acts like a buffer and noticeably reduces sensitivity. LL fly lines are therefore extremely light and ultra-thin – ensuring that contact with the nymph remains direct and unfiltered.
CONSTRUCTION OF AN LL FLY LINE
Despite their very small diameter, LL fly lines are technically similar in construction to classic fly lines:
- Core: provides tensile strength and minimal stretch – essential for direct feedback.
- Coating: smooth, abrasion-resistant surface for clean handling.
- Uniform diameter: typically around 0.55 mm, with no head or taper.
The absence of a taper and the minimal overall mass create a very direct connection between rod tip and nymph – a clear advantage for precise control.
WHY LL FLY LINES EXCEL IN MODERN NYMPH FISHING
In real-world use, LL lines offer several decisive advantages:
- Direct contact with the nymph for detecting even the subtlest takes.
- High control over drift and depth, especially in complex currents.
- Extremely low mass, meaning the line has minimal influence on the nymph setup.
- Highly precise high-sticking at short to medium distances.
Especially when fishing for wary fish or under difficult conditions, this direct connection can make the crucial difference.
VISUAL AID: HIGH-VISIBILITY COLOURED TIP
Many LL fly lines feature a highly visible, colour-contrasted tip. This helps with visual drift control and makes it easier to track the position of the nymphs.
Combined with a fine leader sighter, this creates an extremely sensitive system that perfectly links visual and tactile bite detection.
NOTE ON COMPETITION RULES (FIPS)
For official competitions under FIPS-Mouche rules, fly lines must have a minimum diameter of 0.55 mm. Many modern LL fly lines are specifically designed to meet this requirement.
For everyday fishing, however, this point is only relevant if you plan to fish competitively. Otherwise, the general rule applies: as thin and as light as possible.
LL VS. CLASSIC FLY LINES
LL fly lines are not all-round fly lines, but specialists:
- LL: optimised for modern nymph fishing, direct control and maximum sensitivity.
- WF / DT: better suited for casting, presentation and versatile fly fishing.
QUICK PRACTICAL CHECK: IS AN LL FLY LINE RIGHT FOR YOU?
- You mainly fish modern nymphing / Euro nymphing: LL is ideal.
- You want maximum contact and control: this is where level lines really shine.
- You fish competitions: look for FIPS-compliant models.
- You also fish dry flies or streamers: WF or DT will be the better base.
