TERRESTRIAL INSECTS

ESPECIALLY IN SUMMER THEY ARE EXTREMELY CATCHY AND CAN BE FISHED WELL EVEN IN FAST RUNNING WATER

Terrestrials is a collective term for all fly patterns that imitate insects that spend their entire life cycle on land. The fact that they are nevertheless interesting for fish and fly fishing is because these insects not so rarely fall unintentionally into the water. Therefore, you should always have a few samples of these artificial flies in your fly box.

Especially in summer, land insects appear more frequently and sometimes in masses. They are active throughout the whole day, also in the hot midday hours and in the afternoon. This makes these patterns a very catchy alternative when there is a lull in takes on conventional flies.

EASY, FAT PREY

On waters fringed by meadows and forests, it is a regular occurrence for these insects to fall from the bank vegetation due to a gust of wind or other disturbance and land in the water. There, the clumsy little animals are easy prey for trout and co. Due to their size and mass, they are also real delicacies for every fish to fill its stomach. Fished at the right time, terrestrials can be a real highlight on the water and even lure the big ones out of their shelters. Because no fish wants to miss out on such a morsel without much effort.

HIGHLY VISIBLE AND SUPER BUOYANT

But it is not only because of their catchability that you should fish specifically with terrestrials. Because of the way they are tied, they also offer very tangible advantages in presentation. The imitation of the many legs, antennae, hairs and other appendages ensures that these fly patterns float perfectly in the surface film. The imitation of the comparatively voluminous body, which is realised either by deer hair or highly buoyant foam, also contributes to this. This makes these flies excellent for fishing in turbulent and fast-flowing waters, as they have superb buoyancy characteristics. In addition, these flies are either tied directly in highly visible colours such as the imitations of bees, wasps and bumblebees. Or they have a highly visible spot. This makes it easy to keep an eye on your fly even in difficult lighting conditions and in the rushing white water of fast-flowing streams. This makes it simple to place these flies in the right spots, to guide them well and to quit every take with a strike.

Tip: When fly fishing with a dry fly, delicate presentation is important. Terrestrials, instead, are allowed to hit the water surface a little more conspicuously. This attracts the fish's attention and encourages them to take the morsel.

THE RIGHT PATTERN FOR EVERY SITUATION

We have compiled the most catchy patterns for you and grouped them into the following categories:

This way you can quickly and easily find the best and most suitable ("match the hatch") imitations of land insects for your waters. All flies in these categories are tied on barbless hooks. This makes them particularly suitable for gently releasing the fish.
