Testing the JMC YOTO XPR 30 & 50 semi-automatic fly reels
More than 10 years after the launch of the iconic YOTO series, French manufacturer JMC has updated its semi-automatic fly reel by drawing inspiration from the technical features of its Nymph version. While longtime fans of the model will immediately feel at home, the improvements are nonetheless significant.
1. STATIC TESTING & MEASUREMENTS
In terms of dimensions, these new YOTO XPR models are identical to the previous versions. While the smaller model (XPR30) is only slightly heavier than its predecessor (+10 g), the larger XPR50 shares exactly the same weight. Beyond the visual updates, which include revised colours and a redesigned spool machining pattern, the main improvements are found in:
- the addition of a disc within the drag system, significantly improving both precision and long-term durability;
- a much more ergonomic and accessible drag adjustment knob while fishing, identical to the one found on the YOTO Nymph.
2. EDITORIAL VERDICT
The new YOTO XPR30 features spool dimensions identical to those of the YOTO Nymph. Its capacity is sufficient to accommodate a #2 or #3 fly line for dry-fly fishing. Anglers wishing to alternate between dry-fly fishing with a #2 or #3 line and Euro nymphing with a single reel may therefore find it useful to purchase an additional spool.
Another option is to use a standard #2 or #3 fly line that allows for dry-fly fishing while simply adapting the leader setup when switching to Euro nymphing.
Our contributor Christian Guimonnet, who particularly enjoys precise presentations in fast-flowing water, successfully uses this size after cutting his usual DT4 fly line in half—there is little need for a full 20-metre line when fishing less than 10 metres from modest-sized trout. This simple and economical solution fits perfectly on the reel and makes it even more versatile.
One point worth noting: anglers purchasing two spools to switch between different setups should take care not to lose the spool retaining screw during spool changes.
The weight of the XPR30 (143 g, or approximately 160–170 g once loaded with a #2 or #3 line) is ideal for balancing modern rods between 9'6" and 10'6", which are commonly used for versatile trout fishing applications.
The XPR50, meanwhile, is intended for more demanding applications. At 160 g, it is capable of balancing the longest Euro nymphing rods (11' and longer) and/or more powerful models (#3/4 and above). For Euro nymphing on larger rivers, its larger arbor diameter provides a significantly faster retrieval rate, a highly appreciated advantage in many situations.
This type of high-capacity semi-automatic reel also proves extremely useful for certain active dry-fly and sight-nymphing techniques whenever a fighting handle can be dispensed with. A typical example is fishing alpine lakes, where having excess fly line lying on the ground is often inconvenient. The trigger mechanism allows rapid line management and saves valuable time while reducing tangles with bankside vegetation.
