FLY ROD TEST: RIVER HERO 9'3 #3 & NYMPHING HERO² 10'6 #3
The Vision Hero range, first introduced in the early 2020s, has featured repeatedly in our reviews thanks to its outstanding value for money. In 2026, the Finnish manufacturer updates the series with the arrival of the Hero². Like their predecessors, these rods cover the full spectrum of trout fishing applications in rivers and lakes. We begin with two models designed for refined, competition-inspired techniques: the 9'3 #3 and the 10'6 #3.

1. MEASUREMENT ANALYSIS
The Common Cents System protocol was used to characterise the power and action of these two rods.
1.1. POWER
In terms of power, 31 and 27 cents respectively were required to bend these rods through one third of their length.
With an ERN of 3.57, the 9'3 delivers exactly the power level indicated by its rating and is a true #3. The 10'6, on the other hand, is slightly overrated and is in reality closer to a #2/3, with an ERN of 2.97.
1.2. ACTION
Looking at action, as characterised by the Action Angle (AA), the 9'3 features a moderate-fast action with an AA of 65°, while the 10'6 falls into the fast category with an AA exceeding 66°.
1.3. BUILD CONFIGURATION
The respective component configurations are entirely consistent with the intended applications of each rod.
The 10'6 Nymhing Hero², designed specifically for Euro nymphing, features:
- a perfectly positioned stripping guide located just 26 cm from the grip, helping to minimise line sag when fishing with a high rod position,
- a downlocking reel seat that significantly improves the balance of the rod-and-reel setup, especially when combined with the 170 mm grip, which is ideally suited to the use of a semi-automatic reel,
- a snake guide on the tip section to reduce tangles when fishing exclusively with monofilament.
The 9'3 River Hero, intended for casting a conventional fly line, features a more traditional guide configuration.
In both cases, it is worth noting the relatively slim grip diameter of just 22 mm.

As for finishing details, these fly rod models are equipped with both a hook keeper and alignment dots on the sections.
1.4. FISHING COMFORT
When it comes to fishing comfort, these rods are genuinely impressive and stand shoulder to shoulder with competitors costing considerably more.
As an example, the Hero² 10'6 #2/3 delivers a slightly lower PTE than the JMC Performer Infinity 10'6 #2/3 of identical length and power, despite costing nearly twice as much.
For optimal balance, a reel weighing approximately 120 to 130 grams empty is recommended for the 10'6. Slightly less is required for the 9'3, especially when fishing a #3 fly line, which is naturally heavier than a 0.55 mm Euro nymphing monofilament. A reel weighing around 110 to 120 grams empty balances this model perfectly.
The Hero² rods are designed primarily for refined fishing techniques on small to medium-sized rivers.
2. EDITORIAL VERDICT
At Truites & Cie, we place great importance on presenting tackle that remains accessible to every budget, with a particular appreciation for products offering outstanding value for money. Given the current economic climate, highlighting such equipment in our reviews is more relevant than ever.
That is precisely the purpose of today's article introducing the new Vision Hero² series. These rods compete remarkably well against models such as the Guideline Elevation and the JMC Passion in the €200–300 price bracket. Their component configurations are carefully matched to their respective length and power ratings, which ultimately determine their intended applications.
Let's take a closer look at what these two models are designed to do on the water.
The River Hero 9'3 features a rather distinctive length that has been adopted by several manufacturers in recent years, largely due to developments in competitive fly fishing. At 283 cm, it remains exceptionally responsive and precise while providing excellent high-stick drift control in fast water.
This length also allows the use of particularly long leaders exceeding 5.60 metres, while remaining compliant with competition regulations. According to FIPS rules, the maximum leader length in competition must not exceed twice the rod length, including the tippet.
Within this category, the Hero² proves highly versatile thanks to its genuine #3 power, while its moderate-fast action is specifically designed to minimise both break-offs and lost fish. It presents a serious alternative to the Performer Infinity 9'4 #3/4, which is slightly more powerful—and more expensive. A #3 fly line is the ideal match for this Vision.
The latest Nymphing Hero² 10'6, meanwhile, joins the growing category of 10'6 rods with true #2/3 power and fast actions, alongside models such as the Angefly Stratège 10'6 #2/3 and the JMC Performer Infinity 10'6 #2/3.
Its primary purpose is refined Euro nymphing using relatively light flies, with an ideal nymph size range of approximately 2 to 3.5 mm, on small and medium-sized rivers. The component configuration is perfectly suited to this style of fishing, while its value for money remains virtually unmatched on today's market.
