Gear Test: JMC KULT 10'6 #2/3 / 11' #1/2 / 11' #3/4

JMC KULT 10'6 #2/3, 11' #1/2 AND 11' #3/4

Flagship additions to the 2026 JMC catalogue, the JMC KULT rods are already generating significant interest among river trout anglers. Let’s take a closer look at what the measurements tell us for the dedicated Euro nymphing models, namely the 10'6 #2/3, the 11' #1/2 and the 11' #3/4.

1. MEASUREMENT ANALYSIS

The Common Cents System protocol was used to determine the power and action of these three rods.

1.1. POWER

In terms of power, 30, 25 and 36 cents were required to bend these three rods over one third of their respective lengths. After conversion, this results in ERN values of 3.42, 2.67 and 4.31.

The stated line ratings are therefore all slightly underestimated, by around half a line weight: the 10'6 is in fact a #3, the first 11' a #2 and the second a #4.

1.2. ACTION

With an identical AA of 65°, the 10'6 and the 11' #1/2 feature a moderate-fast action (AA between 63 and 66°), while the 11' #3/4 is fast (AA above 66°).

1.3. BUILD QUALITY

The build is entirely consistent with rods designed for Euro nymphing.

When fishing with a high rod tip, the line may sag above the handle if the first guide is positioned too far from the off hand. A distance of less than 40 cm from the handle is recommended to limit this effect, which is the case here with 33 cm. The presence of a downlocking reel seat significantly improves the balance of the rod and reel setup. A snake-style guide is also fitted near the tip to reduce line coiling when fishing straight mono.

The most demanding fans of semi-automatic reels may find the handle slightly too long (175 mm), making it less comfortable to keep the ring finger of the rod hand on the trigger while fishing. This remains a minor detail for the vast majority of anglers, and those with larger hands will not notice it at all.

It is also worth noting the relatively slim handle diameter (23 mm) and the use of AAA-grade cork.

In terms of finishing, the KULT series features both a hook keeper and alignment dots on the sections.

1.4. FISHING COMFORT

In terms of fishing comfort, these rods are excellent.

Compared to models of similar length and power, the 10'6 comes in at around fifteen grams lighter than the Guideline Elevation Nymph 10'6 #3, while the 11' #1/2 matches the Soldarini Tournament 11' #3, despite the latter costing twice as much.

For proper balance, plan on using an unfilled reel weighing approximately 130–140 g for the 10'6 (a Yoto Nymph will be a perfect match), 140–150 g for the 11' #1/2 and 170–180 g for the 11' #3/4.

2. EDITORIAL VERDICT

The French company JMC is clearly very dynamic during this off-season. Its new “river trout” range is positioned in the mid-price segment of the current market. At this level of investment, expectations are quite high in terms of product quality, particularly regarding fishing comfort and responsiveness, and the rods must clearly stand out from entry-level models.

These JMC KULT rods certainly do not disappoint: the build is consistent, the finishes are well executed and the on-the-water performance is clearly convincing. In terms of application, however, these rods differ significantly.

The 10'6, first of all, is a true benchmark of versatility for Euro nymphing on small and medium-sized rivers. With its true #3 power, it handles trout of all sizes and easily casts a wide range of nymph weights. Its moderate-fast action produces a smooth and progressive curve, without any stiff spots, making it ideal for reducing break-offs and lost fish. It is a true all-round tool that also allows for mixed techniques such as 60% Euro nymphing and 40% dry fly fishing. A small clarification for fans of the brand: this KULT 10'6 is slightly more powerful than the Performer Infinity 10'6 #2/3 that was tested last winter.

If the 10'6 is an all-purpose nymph rod, the two 11' models are much more specialized. The #1/2 is designed for (ultra-)light and delicate Euro nymphing. With its true #2 power and moderate-fast action, it gives you everything needed to handle delicate fish on very fine leaders, making it ideal for grayling fishing, for example. 8x or 9x tippets can be used. Naturally, smaller bead sizes are recommended, typically between 2 and 3.2 mm.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the 11' #3/4 is a much more powerful rod that excels in heavy nymphing for large fish. It is one of the most powerful 11' rods currently available on the market. Nymphs weighing over 1 gram pose no problem, nor do strong, hard-fighting trout from large French rivers or abroad. Its fast action ensures perfect control of large salmonids in the final moments of the fight.
