HYDROPSYCHE FULL-CONTACT XUL FLY RODS

DIRECT CONTACT, MAXIMUM SENSITIVITY AND PURE FUNCTION

When developing the HYDROPSYCHE FULL-CONTACT XUL fly rods, Sandro Soldarini had one clear objective: to give anglers the most direct, unfiltered connection possible to the nymph when fishing modern Euro nymphing techniques. This series is not about flashy looks or exaggerated promises, but about precise feedback, clean drift control and maximum feel – exactly where Euro nymphing truly matters.

BLANK CONSTRUCTION & MATERIAL DESIGN

The ultra-slim blank is built using a combination of graph-carbon and 45° carbon layers. This construction increases torsional stiffness and helps prevent the rod from twisting under load – a key advantage when nymphs need to be guided precisely, lifted in a controlled manner, or when a clean hook set is required at distance.

The blank features a fast, crisp action while remaining easy to manage at every stage of the drift and fight. It is intentionally left unpolished to preserve the structural integrity of the carbon fibres – a detail that benefits both durability and sensitivity.

INTEGRATED CARBON HANDLE & COMPONENTS

A defining feature of these rods is the integrated 3K carbon handle, used exclusively on this series. Unlike traditional cork grips, it is not mounted onto the blank but forms a structural part of it. This allows vibrations to travel directly to the hand instead of being dampened, giving the rod a feel that is remarkably direct and intuitive.

The handle provides a secure, comfortable grip even in wet conditions and keeps the overall look clean and purposeful. It is complemented by a generously machined down-locking aluminium reel seat with a carbon spacer for a well-balanced setup. The compact carbon fighting butt lets you rest the rod against your forearm, helping to reduce fatigue in the wrist and rod arm during long sessions.

The single-leg Sea Guide running guides are deliberately angled forward to reduce the risk of ultra-thin fly lines or monofilament tangling. They are wrapped with carbon fibre thread, which saves weight and keeps the rod’s consistent all-carbon material philosophy intact.

A practical detail: discreet fish-length reference markings at 20, 30 and 40 cm are placed on the lower section of the rod, allowing for quick size estimation without unnecessary handling – efficient and fish-friendly when releasing your catch.

TWO TIPS – TWO DISTINCT APPLICATIONS

All rods in the HYDROPSYCHE FULL-CONTACT XUL series are supplied in a 3+2-piece configuration (three rod sections plus two interchangeable tips) and include two different tips: a hollow standard tip and an ultra-sensitive solid carbon tip (XUL).

The solid tip is exceptionally soft and sensitive. It works with minimal load and is ideally suited for pure monofilament setups. Even extremely light nymphs in the range of 0.3 to 0.8 g can be presented with ease. Subtle bottom contacts and delicate takes are clearly transmitted, while the flexible tip protects ultra-fine tippets by cushioning sudden runs and headshakes.

For use with ultra-thin Euro nymph fly lines as well as larger and heavier nymphs, the standard tip is the better choice. Its faster recovery provides more control during casting and helps maintain authority when managing complex currents and longer drifts.

All ferrules feature alignment dot markings, allowing you to line up the rod sections perfectly when assembling the rod.

MODELS & RECOMMENDED APPLICATIONS

FULL-CONTACT 10'2": Designed for small to medium rivers and highly technical, delicate presentations. Ideal for precise drifts and finesse fishing.
FULL-CONTACT 10'6": The most versatile rod in the series. Excellent all-round performance, especially effective for tandem nymphing and varied water types.
FULL-CONTACT 11'2": Built for large rivers, long drifts and maximum reach. Offers outstanding control in complex currents and at distance.

THOUGHT THROUGH TO THE LAST DETAIL
