Nylon tippet material
Supple and strong - for tippets or knotted leaders
Looking for high-quality nylon material to build your own tippets and knotted leaders? Then you’ve come to the right place. We offer a wide range of nylon lines perfectly suited for this purpose. Especially when dry fly fishing, your leader and tippet should float properly on the surface, and nylon is ideal for this thanks to its material properties. In addition, soft and supple nylon still stands out with excellent knot strength and impressive breaking strain values. This makes it the preferred choice for fine tippets in many fly-fishing situations. Nylon also offers outstanding value for money, allowing you to replace your tippet regularly and always fish with fresh, flawless material free from weak spots, kinks, or wind knots. In this category, you’ll find a wide selection of nylon lines on practical spools and in finely graduated diameters for every application.
PREMIUM NYLON TIPPET MATERIAL FOR PERFECT LEADERS
Although you can choose from both knotless tapered leaders and hand-tied tapered leaders, you'll still need to replace your tippet regularly. Even if your leader already features a sufficiently long, fine tippet section, it becomes shorter every time you change flies. Sooner or later, you'll need to attach a new tippet to maintain the correct leader length and ensure a natural presentation.
TIPPET RING OR LOOP-TO-LOOP CONNECTION – HOW TO ATTACH YOUR TIPPET
When tying your own tapered leader, the individual sections are permanently joined using knots such as the blood knot. The tippet, however, should ideally be attached in a way that allows it to be replaced easily. Otherwise, every tippet change would shorten the leader by the length of the knot. Two proven methods have become the standard:
Tippet ring: A small tippet ring is tied to the front of the leader. The tippet can then be attached quickly and easily. High-quality tippet rings feature a perfectly smooth finish that won't damage your leader material, while remaining so small and lightweight that they have virtually no effect on the way the leader turns over.
Loop-to-loop connection: Another proven option is a loop-to-loop connection. Simply tie a small loop in both the leader and the tippet, for example using the discreet yet exceptionally strong Perfection Loop. The two loops are then connected by passing them through each other, allowing the tippet to be replaced in just a few seconds.
Both methods offer the same major advantage: you can change your tippet as often as necessary without gradually shortening the leader itself, as would inevitably happen with a permanent knot.
WHEN NYLON IS THE BEST CHOICE FOR TIPPETS
Although fluorocarbon has become increasingly popular as a leader and tippet material, nylon remains the better choice in many situations. Especially when fishing dry flies or whenever maximum suppleness is required, nylon offers several important advantages:
- Softer and more supple: Nylon is more flexible than fluorocarbon, allowing flies to drift and behave more naturally.
- Superior knot strength: Thanks to its excellent knotability, nylon achieves exceptionally strong and reliable knots.
- Higher breaking strength: Premium nylon generally offers greater breaking strength than fluorocarbon of the same diameter.
- Lower specific gravity: Nylon sinks much more slowly and remains in or near the surface film, making it the preferred choice for dry fly fishing.
- Excellent value for money: High-quality nylon delivers outstanding performance at a very competitive price.

UNDERSTANDING THE X TIPPET SIZE SYSTEM
When following leader-tying instructions or looking at tippet spools from certain manufacturers, you'll often find designations such as 0X, 3X, 5X or 7X alongside the diameter in millimetres. This is a tippet sizing system used primarily in the English-speaking world.
Since imperial measurements have traditionally been used instead of the metric system, the X rating has become a simple and practical way of identifying different tippet diameters. Rather than comparing very small millimetre values, anglers can quickly select the appropriate tippet by referring to its X size.
It is worth noting, however, that this system is not fully standardised. Depending on the manufacturer, the actual diameter may vary slightly. In practice, these differences are usually only a few hundredths of a millimetre and are rarely significant.
It is equally important to remember that the X tippet rating has absolutely no connection to the AFTMA line weight of your fly rod or fly line. These two systems describe completely different characteristics and should never be confused.
As a general rule:
The higher the number before the "X", the finer the tippet diameter.
The table below provides a useful reference, showing the most common X ratings together with their approximate diameters in millimetres.
| X Size | Diameter (mm) |
| 10X | 0.074 mm |
| 9X | 0.083 mm |
| 8X | 0.090 mm |
| 7X | 0.100 mm |
| 6X | 0.128 mm |
| 5X | 0.148 mm |
| 4X | 0.185 mm |
| 3X | 0.200 mm |
| 2X | 0.235 mm |
| 1X | 0.250 mm |
| 0X | 0.285 mm |
