COTTARELLI ALFA FLY TYING VISE

ITALIAN INNOVATION

The ALFA vise embodies the craftsmanship and technical expertise that have always distinguished the fly tying vises created by Franco Cottarelli.

THE ALFA BASE

With the legs fully opened to a total width of 32.5 cm and a distance of 18 cm from the main shaft, the ALFA base provides exceptional stability without relying on the particularly heavy pedestal commonly used on many other fly tying vises.

This keeps the vise perfectly stable, even when considerable pressure is applied to the hook while tying, without adding unnecessary overall weight.

Despite its generous dimensions, the ALFA base folds away quickly and occupies very little space. Combined with its relatively low weight, this makes it easy to transport, whether you are taking it on a fishing trip or to a fly tying club.

ADJUSTMENTS

Like every vise in the Cottarelli system, the ALFA offers a wide range of adjustments, allowing you to position the hook exactly as you prefer and work in maximum comfort.

An Allen key stored inside the main shaft allows you to make all the necessary adjustments using the dedicated screws. Its integrated storage position keeps it always within easy reach and reduces the risk of it being misplaced.

Teflon washers on every locking screw prevent direct contact between the metal components, protecting them from wear over time while ensuring precise adjustments.

The two main joints allow you to adjust the angle of both the main shaft and the upper assembly.

The height of the main shaft can be adjusted through a range of approximately 6 cm, allowing the vise to be set to an overall height between 18 and 24 cm.

The upper assembly rotates freely through 360°. Its adjustable friction system allows the rotation to remain completely free, operate with controlled resistance or be locked entirely. The level of friction can be adjusted using the collar indicated by the arrow in the image below.

When the hook is correctly aligned with the rotational axis of the ALFA vise, you can rotate the hook shank perfectly around its own axis. This is particularly useful when wrapping certain materials, as you simply hold them in place while rotating the hook.

All manually operated surfaces feature a knurled finish, providing a secure grip and allowing quick, precise and effortless adjustments.

The legs of the base feature five plastic-lined tool holes and four integrated magnets, ideal for keeping frequently used fly tying tools within easy reach and securing small metal accessories or materials while tying.

ALFA VISE HEADS

When purchasing the ALFA vise, you can choose one of the three available heads: Medium, Midge or Streamer. Thanks to the interchangeable system, you can add further heads later and swap them within seconds to suit your tying requirements.

MEDIUM HEAD

The Medium head offers maximum versatility and securely holds hooks from size 1 down to size 24.

MIDGE HEAD

The Midge head is designed for the smallest hooks and performs at its best with hook sizes ranging from 14 to 24.

STREAMER HEAD

The Streamer head is designed to provide maximum holding power on large hooks and performs at its best with hook sizes ranging from 1 to 8.

CLAMPING SYSTEM

The jaw clamping system is both simple and highly effective. Turning the rear adjustment ring pushes a steel cone forwards, spreading the rear ends of the jaws apart. As the jaws pivot on their respective pins, they close at the front and secure the hook. This mechanism delivers exceptionally high clamping force with minimal effort.

Because of the high clamping force, it is important to position the hook correctly inside the jaws. Clamping the hook too close to the tips may cause the steel jaws to chip. This is not a manufacturing defect but a characteristic common to all fly tying vises fitted with steel jaws. When the vise is used correctly, this issue does not occur.

The heads of the ALFA vise can also be used as a display stand for a freshly tied fly. This is particularly useful during fly tying competitions or when photographing the finished pattern.

THE COTTARELLI SYSTEM

Cottarelli vises are built around a modular system in which all compatible components and accessories can be combined. The ALFA base, just like the Travel and Standard bases, can accommodate any head or pliers from the Cottarelli system.

The ALFA vise includes the ALFA base, the short fork and one head of your choice from the three classic options: Streamer, Medium or Midge.

PLEASE NOTE: The only exception is the Pocket vise, which uses its own dedicated heads and is not compatible with the other accessories in the Cottarelli range.

ROBUST CONSTRUCTION

The ALFA vise is manufactured from steel, brass and aluminium. Premium materials combined with meticulous craftsmanship down to the smallest detail result in a fly tying vise designed to last a lifetime and serve generations of fly tyers.

PADDED CARRY CASE

The ALFA vise comes supplied with a practical padded carry case, ideal for safe transport, protecting the vise from impacts and scratches, and keeping it neatly stored when not in use.

Cottarelli vises can be complemented with a wide range of accessories specifically developed to make tying even the most complex fly patterns easier. Explore the dedicated category and choose the accessories that best suit your tying needs.
