WHAT IS THE BLOOD KNOT FOR?

The blood knot is used to connect 2 lines with the same or slightly different diameter. Basically, you create two opposing spirals of line that rest one on top of the other and if made correctly it can have a very high breaking strength, almost equal to that of the thinnest line you have used.

Another strong point, besides its resistance, is to be able to connect 2 lines without breaking their linearity, practically it will be like fishing with a single knotless line. And because of this characteristic that is used to tie the knotted leaders for dry fly fishing, because it guarantees fluidity and delicacy in the casting of artificial flies.

As far as the number of windings to tie the blood knot is concerned, there is no golden rule, let's say that the thicker the line the less windings you have to do and vice versa the thinner the line the more windings you have to do. As an indication, the windings must be between 4 and 7, so on a line of less than 0.20 you can make 7 windings, while for a 0.70 is better not to exceed 4.

Before closing the knot definitively you must moisten the area concerned with a little saliva or any liquid floatant for dry flies. The important thing is that the knot can slide until closed without unnecessary friction which could weaken the breaking strength.

BLOOD KNOT TOOL FEATURES:

From the diabolical mind of the artist Franco Cottarelli was born a brand new utensil: the BLOOD KNOT TOOL that simplifies and speeds up the creation of the blood knot, guaranteeing a perfect execution always to make the most of the very high breaking strength of this knot.

Cottarelli's BLOOD KNOT TOOL is ideal to tie knotted leaders, especially if you tie many of them throughout the year. Discard is minimal and always the same, which allows you to be very precise in making the various lengths of the sections that make up your leaders.

You can use it with lines with a diameter ranging from 0.10 to 0.70, remembering that the thicker the line the less windings you have to make and vice versa the thinner the line the more windings you have to make.

The materials used for its manufacture are steel, aluminium and brass which make it extremely strong. The shaft of the BLOOD KNOT TOOL has a diameter of 9 mm and is therefore compatible with the base of every Cottarelli fly tying vise.

It is fixed to the table with the special clamp (FIG. 1) and in case you are an owner of the Standard or Pocket vise of the Cottarelli series, you can buy only the main piece (FIG. 2) and use the clamp of your vise, thus saving some money.

The upper part can be tilted 90 degrees (FIG. 3), giving you the possibility to work both horizontally and vertically depending on how you feel better. You can also unscrew the main piece from the pin that fits into the table clamp (FIG. 4), which allows you to take it with you at all times, even on the river. With a bit of practice you can also use it freehand.

As you will see in more detail in the video at the bottom of the page, the 2 lines are temporarily locked by inserting them between the silicone rings (FIG. 5). You can adjust the pressure between the rings by screwing or unscrewing the two brass knobs on top of them (FIG. 6) in order to always have an optimal grip according to the diameter of the line you are using.
