The FLYLAB BASE is a vise made by the Italian company Stonfo, which in the fly fishing tackle market has now become synonymous with seriousness and reliability. The stainless steel and aluminium used to make this vise make it extremely solid and robust. Its price is really affordable, which is ideal if you are a neophyte who wants to start tying his first artificial flies without spending a lot of money. Also, thanks to its excellent construction quality, you won't feel the need to change it after you have acquired some manual skills.

To facilitate understanding we have identified each piece of the vise with a letter. Each time a specific piece of the vise will be named you will find the reference letter next to the word.
The Pedestal base (G) is made of a very sturdy plastic material and is equipped with 4 non-slip feet that guarantee excellent stability during fly tying. On the surface of the base there are 2 practical housings inside which you can store hooks or tungsten beads to keep them always at hand and prevent them from being unintentionally lost.
The vise bar is threaded into the pedestal base in the appropriate seat (F) and then secured by means of the locking screw (E). The holes in the locking screw enable you to insert the Allen key provided and use it as a lever to exert greater force when tightening the screw.
Its dimensions are very small and once disassembled it takes up very little space, making it easy and convenient to transport if you want to take it with you to tie in clubs or elsewhere.
The head of the vise is able to tilt at will (FIG.1), you just need to act on the appropriate bolt with the Allen key. By loosening the locking screw (E), you can rotate the whole head 360° (FIG.2). This can be useful to move the hook out of the pedestal base of the vise and prevent drops from accidentally falling on the base of the vise when using glue or paint, risking damaging it.
The jaws holder cylinder (C) is made from a single block of stainless steel and is able to rotate the hook 360°. By acting on the drag knob (B) it is possible to adjust the rotation in 3 different ways.
Free: by loosening the drag knob as much as possible, the hook will be completely free to rotate 360° without any friction.
Medium lock: By tightening the drag knob at half stroke the hook will always be free to rotate 360° but it will lock in the 0° position and in the 180° position (FIG.3). To unlock it from these two positions and continue with the rotation, simply apply a little more force.
Total lock: By fully tightening the drag knob, the hook will lock in the chosen position.
To tighten the jaws (D) and lock the hook you will need to bring the drag knob (B) to full lock and by turning the rear knob (A) counterclockwise you will open the jaws of the vise, vice versa you will close them. Continuing to rotate the rear knob counterclockwise you will unscrew the jaws, thus managing to extract them from their seat and replace them with one of the other 2 interchangeable jaws that can be purchased separately. The supplied medium jaws can be used on hooks ranging from 8 to 24. To avoid damaging the jaws, it is strongly recommended to insert the hook a few millimetres inside the jaws, to avoid chipping the tip of the jaws during clamping.
Together with the FLYLAB BASE you will find a practical spring material clip which is inserted on the jaws holder cylinder (SEE PHOTO). This spring is used to block the tying thread, hackles or any other fly tying material that you want to momentarily move to be freer and more agile in some steps of the fly tying.
The FLYLAB BASE is compatible with all the accessories of the Stonfo line.
