COTTARELLI ALFA PLUS FLY TYING VISE

TWO INNOVATIVE HEADS TO CHOOSE FROM

The ALFA PLUS vise is available with your choice of one of two heads: the MAGIC PLUS head or the MICRO PLUS head.

These two truly unique heads are yet another brilliant development by Franco Cottarelli, who continues to expand the possibilities of fly tying with original ideas and innovative technical solutions.

THE ALFA BASE

With the legs fully opened to a total width of 32.5 cm and a distance of 18 cm from the main shaft, the ALFA base provides exceptional stability without relying on the particularly heavy pedestal commonly found on many other fly tying vises.

This keeps the vise perfectly stable, even when considerable pressure is applied to the hook while tying, without adding unnecessary overall weight.

Despite its generous dimensions, the ALFA base folds away quickly and occupies very little space. Combined with its relatively low weight, this makes it easy to transport, whether you are taking it on a fishing trip or to a fly tying club.

ADJUSTMENTS

Like every vise in the Cottarelli system, the ALFA PLUS offers a wide range of adjustments, allowing you to position the hook exactly as you prefer and work in maximum comfort.

An Allen key stored inside the main shaft allows you to make all the necessary adjustments using the dedicated screws. Its integrated storage position keeps it always within easy reach and reduces the risk of it being misplaced.

Teflon washers on every locking screw prevent direct contact between the metal components, protecting them from wear over time while ensuring precise adjustments.

The two main joints allow you to adjust the angle of both the main shaft and the upper assembly.

The height of the main shaft can be adjusted through a range of approximately 6 cm, allowing the vise to be set to an overall height between 18 and 24 cm.

The upper assembly rotates freely through 360°. Its adjustable friction system allows the rotation to remain completely free, operate with controlled resistance or be locked entirely. The level of friction can be adjusted using the collar indicated by the arrow in the images below.

With either of the ALFA PLUS heads, correctly aligning the hook with the rotational axis allows you to rotate the hook shank perfectly around its own axis. This is particularly useful when wrapping certain materials, as you simply hold them in position while rotating the hook beneath them.

All manually operated surfaces feature a knurled finish, providing a secure grip and allowing quick, precise and effortless adjustments.

The legs of the base feature five plastic-lined tool holes and four integrated magnets, ideal for keeping frequently used fly tying tools within easy reach and securing small metal accessories or materials while tying.

THE PLUS HEADS

The ALFA PLUS vise is available with either the MAGIC PLUS head or the MICRO PLUS head.

Both heads feature unique technical characteristics and differ significantly from the conventional clamping systems used on traditional fly tying vises.

MAGIC PLUS HEAD

Developed by Franco Cottarelli, the MAGIC PLUS head is exceptionally versatile and allows you to tie artificial flies on hooks of virtually any size efficiently and securely.

Designed as a universal head, it allows you to move directly from tying small trout dry flies to large pike streamers without having to change the head or jaws.

Large hooks: Large hooks are positioned towards the rear of the jaws, where two additional steel plates provide two secure contact points on the hook bend. This design ensures maximum stability without requiring excessive jaw pressure, reducing the risk of damaging large and often expensive hooks.
Medium-sized hooks: A specially machined recess inside the jaws provides medium-sized hooks with a stable and highly effective hold.
Small hooks: Small hooks are secured at the tips of the jaws, where they are held precisely and safely.

Provided that the joint bolts are not overtightened, the MAGIC PLUS head remains exceptionally stable while tying. At the same time, its position can be adjusted whenever required without constantly loosening and retightening the joints.

MICRO PLUS HEAD

Unlike conventional heads, which secure the hook by clamping it between two jaws, the MICRO PLUS head holds the hook under tension. The major advantage of this distinctive system is that it achieves an exceptionally secure hold with minimal effort.

Turning the knurled aluminium knob opens the retaining eye at the tip of the head. You then insert the hook into the opening and turn the knob in the opposite direction until the hook is fully and securely locked under tension.

The MICRO PLUS head is suitable for hooks ranging from #18 to #6. The maximum hook size is only a guideline: the actual limit is determined by the opening of the retaining eye. As long as a hook fits into the opening, it can be securely held and used for tying.

To adjust the joint bolts, you can use the supplied 7 mm spanner.

THE COTTARELLI SYSTEM

Cottarelli vises are built around a modular system in which all compatible components and accessories can be combined. The ALFA base, just like the Travel and Standard bases, can accommodate any head or pliers from the Cottarelli system.

The ALFA PLUS vise includes the ALFA base and your choice of either the MAGIC PLUS head or the MICRO PLUS head.

PLEASE NOTE: The only exception is the Pocket vise, which uses its own dedicated heads and is not compatible with the other accessories in the Cottarelli range.

ROBUST CONSTRUCTION

The ALFA PLUS vise is manufactured from steel, brass and aluminium. Premium materials combined with meticulous craftsmanship down to the smallest detail result in a fly tying vise designed to last a lifetime and serve generations of fly tyers.

PADDED CARRY CASE

The ALFA PLUS vise comes supplied with a practical padded carry case, ideal for safe transport, protecting the vise from impacts and scratches, and keeping it neatly stored when not in use.

Cottarelli vises can be complemented with a wide range of accessories specifically developed to make tying even the most complex fly patterns easier. Explore the dedicated category and choose the accessories that best suit your tying needs.
