KIWAMI TENKARA RODS

JAPANESE TENKARA TRADITION REINTERPRETED

With the KIWAMI series, the Japanese company River Peak presents first-class tenkara rods that make fishing a real pleasure. In terms of features and action, they are very much based on the centuries-old tradition of classic Japanese tenkara. State-of-the-art materials and high-quality manufacturing ensure that you have a pleasantly light and surprisingly robust tenkara rod in your hand, which can be cast so naturally that you can fully focus on the water and the fish.

FEATURES AND ACTION

The KIWAMI Tenkara rods already differ visually from other Tenkara rods and also follow a deliberately minimalistic design. The rod blank is black with a gloss finish and the majority of the blank parts have a ribbed surface, which is created by an additional spiral wrap with carbon fibre thread. The rod handle is made of high-quality cork and is compact in length and diameter. The cylindrical handle shape without profiling contributes to the vintage look, as does the screwed-in, hemispherical wooden end cap. Only the protective rubber cork grip ends on both sides of the rod handle represent a small compromise in terms of features, otherwise you will look in vain for plastic or metal parts or any decorations on this rod. Even the tip cap is made entirely of wood. The Lilian is glued very neatly and directly to the tip of the first rod section and comes without a prefabricated knot.

When you pick up this rod and make your first casts, you realise the legacy of traditional tenkara fishing, because it feels as if you are fishing with a historic tenkara rod made of bamboo. The deep flex ensures a pleasantly relaxed casting action and a natural feel when casting and guiding your fly. How intuitive casting and fishing with the KIWAMI Tenkara rods is becomes particularly clear when you hand them to a child. You will be surprised how wonderfully this works, because with these Tenkara rods they simply start casting and fishing from the very beginning, as if they had never done anything else. This is why the tenkara rods in the KIWAMI series are equally suitable for beginners and experienced tenkara fishing enthusiasts, as they make you feel at ease straight away.

With their special characteristics, all models in the KIWAMI Tenkara series are ideal for classic fishing with Sekasa Kebari, i.e. traditional Tenkara flies, and also demonstrate their strengths in combination with dry flies, which you can also present perfectly with these rods. These rods are less suitable for modern facets of tenkara fishing with weighted nymphs or even small streamers due to their gentle action and deep flex.

The extremely lightweight rods are excellently balanced in all lengths and their low weight ensures that you can fish fatigue-free and fully focussed until the last cast, even on long days on the water.

THE INDIVIDUAL MODELS

KIWAMI Tenkara 330: the shortest model in the series consists of seven sections and has the fastest action, if you can call these rods ‘fast’ at all. It works at a ratio of 6:4 and therefore has a moderate action which, in combination with the low weight of this shortest model, is the absolute pleasure rod for many.

KIWAMI Tenkara 380: The 8-piece model in the medium length is particularly interesting for all those who are looking for a slightly longer range. The action is very similar to its shorter ‘sister’, perhaps a little slower and deeper due to the length.

KIWAMI Tenkara 450: The equation ‘longer rod for bigger fish’ is only partially true for this 9-piece rod model, as it is very similar to the other two in terms of action and bend. Despite its length, it is still well balanced, not least due to the slightly longer handle. On the Japanese home market, however, longer, lighter tenkara rods are also very popular if the water and, above all, obstacles such as vegetation and the like allow it. Thanks to the increased reach, you can also fish for shy fish in crystal-clear water very effectively and inconspicuously.

All models in the KIWAMI series are supplied in a fabric rod sleeve. You can also find the matching rod tubes in our online shop if you want to take your KIWAMI tenkara rod with you on your fishing trips and are looking for a robust and protective solution.

DURABILITY AND SPARE PARTS

Although fine tenkara rods with a soft action can quickly give the impression that they are fragile fishing tools, you can have complete peace of mind with KIWAMI tenkara rods. It is highly unlikely that you will damage these rods when fishing. You can even land larger fish with them without any problems. Damage is more likely to occur if you hit a branch or other obstacle when casting, if the rod bends in an unfavourable angle during the fight, or when collapsing the rod if you push stuck parts into each other with excessive force. A little dexterity is certainly advisable here.

But even if it should happen that a rod section breaks, you can easily replace the defective part by unscrewing the end cap on the handle and removing the parts from behind. You can simply order one of the first 4 rod sections as well as the tip cap directly from us, as experience has shown that these are most frequently affected. Should it really be necessary, we can also provide all other spare parts on request.
