RHINOX 79 FLY REEL

HIGH CAPACITY AND A POWERFUL DRAG FOR DEMANDING FISHING

The RHINOX 79 from Hotfly is a robust fly reel with generous line capacity that really comes into its own for predator and stillwater fly fishing. Its mid-arbour design provides plenty of usable spool volume, while the sealed carbon disc drag delivers reliable performance even when playing powerful fish. The spool can also be changed in just a few simple steps – particularly useful on stillwaters when you need different fly lines to present your flies effectively at different depths. Considering its performance, robust construction and broad range of applications, the RHINOX 79 also offers excellent value for money.

ROBUST ALUMINIUM WITH A FUNCTIONAL SPOKED DESIGN

The frame and spool of the RHINOX 79 are made from die-cast aluminium. This allows for a sturdy yet comparatively lightweight construction designed to withstand regular use on the water. The distinctive spoked design with generous cut-outs reduces the amount of material wherever it is not required, helping to keep the overall weight down. As a result, despite its substantial dimensions and high line capacity, the RHINOX 79 weighs just 180 g.

The open areas also serve a very practical purpose: they allow air to circulate more freely around the fly line and backing, helping both to dry more quickly and reliably after fishing. The matt black finish complements the reel's clean, functional appearance.

SEALED CARBON DRAG FOR POWERFUL FISH

A fly reel's drag can be put under considerable strain when targeting predatory species. For this reason, the RHINOX 79 features a robust, sealed drag system with a carbon drag disc. It delivers plenty of stopping power, can be adjusted precisely and engages smoothly and without any sudden jolts as line is pulled from the reel. This avoids unnecessary shock loads on the leader and connecting knots as the drag comes into play, while still providing ample reserves when a powerful fish takes line.

The large, easy-grip drag knob makes it quick and easy to adjust the drag pressure in a controlled manner. This is particularly useful during a fight, when you need to fine-tune the resistance without fumbling around for a small adjustment knob.

MID-ARBOUR SPOOL WITH PLENTY OF USABLE CAPACITY

Rather than maximising the diameter of the spool core, the RHINOX 79 deliberately prioritises high usable line capacity. With an outer diameter of 100 mm, an inner diameter of 55 mm and an internal spool width of 28 mm, its mid-arbour design provides ample room for bulkier fly lines as well as sufficient backing. Even a WF10 fly line plus 50 m of 30 lb GSP backing fits comfortably on the spool.

This makes the reel particularly interesting for powerful predator setups, but equally suitable for stillwater fly fishing, where very different – and sometimes particularly bulky – line profiles are used depending on the technique.

Please note: With specialised stillwater lines and Froller lines in particular, their considerably greater volume needs to be taken into account. Due to their sometimes extra-long heads, these lines require substantially more spool space than a conventional WF line of the same rating. The floating versions of these fly lines in sizes #8/9 therefore fit on the RHINOX 79 spool only without additional backing. This is worth bearing in mind if you intend to use the reel specifically with these specialised lines.

QUICK AND EASY SPOOL CHANGES

Switching between different lines is often an integral part of stillwater fly fishing. Depending on the depth at which you want to present your flies, a different fly line may be required. With several prepared spools, you can quickly adapt your setup without having to remove and replace the line each time.

Changing the spool on the RHINOX 79 is deliberately straightforward: simply loosen the central retaining screw on the handle side of the spool, pull the spool off the frame, fit your prepared spare spool and tighten the retaining screw again – done. This allows you to set up several lines on separate spools at home and switch between them in just a few simple steps on the water.

SPARE SPOOLS AND COMPLETE REEL SET

To make full use of this concept, spare spools for the RHINOX 79 are also available separately. This allows you to put together exactly the combination of fly lines you need for your preferred techniques and fishing situations.

If you regularly fish with several different lines, the RHINOX 79 is also available as a complete fly reel set. It includes one reel frame with spool plus two additional spare spools, supplied together in a practical padded reel case with separate compartments. This keeps the reel and spare spools neatly organised, securely protected and readily accessible when you need them on the water.

The RHINOX 79 therefore focuses on exactly the features that matter in a fly reel for heavier line ratings and versatile stillwater setups: generous line capacity, a powerful and smooth-running drag, robust construction and easily interchangeable spools. The reel can also be converted for left- or right-hand retrieve. The result is a functional and versatile fly reel at a price that is remarkably attractive considering its features and broad range of applications.
