COQ DE LEÒN feathers are a super versatile and, due to their excellent properties, an indispensable tying material for both traditional and modern fly tyers. These feathers come from a specific breed of roosters from the Leòn region of Spain, where the breeding these roosters with its premium feathers for tying artificial flies has a long tradition. Breeders are accordingly proud and take great care of the animals, because the most beautiful feathers come from the strongest and healthiest roosters. Therefore, the aggressive animals need enough space to roam and get only the best food. With good husbandry, the roosters live to be about 10 years old and provide the highest quality feathers up to an age of about 5 years. Consequently, great care is also taken in the removal of the feathers, as only the best feathers are plucked individually and by hand from the live animal. The spot is then treated with a paste of olive oil and the ash from walnuts.
COQ DE LEÒN feathers have very special characteristics that make them so popular and sought after by fly tyers all over the world. The barbs of the feathers are longer than those of classic rooster feathers, elastic but not quite as stiff as synthetic fibres. The feathers have a very attractive, natural shine that gives your fly patterns a lively look. They are also translucent when held up to the light and evenly coloured on both sides. COQ DE LEÒN feathers are basically divided into two groups, which come from different families of roosters and differ only in their colouring:
- On the one hand, Pardo, which you will find here in different natural colour variations. With these speckled feathers, the fine spots penetrate the feather and are therefore equally visible on both sides of the feather.
- On the other hand, there is the Indio category, which you can also find in our online shop and which is characterised by a uniform colouring without speckled pigmentation. Available in different natural colour variations.
COQ DE LEÒN feathers are a natural product, so each feather is unique and there are also smooth transitions between the different color variations offered.
These feathers are equally suitable for a wide range of different fly patterns and tying styles. The long, light, straight and elastic barbs of these feathers are excellent for tying the tails of dry flies but also for classic and modern nymph patterns. COQ DE LEÒN feathers are also ideal for tying the wings of dry flies, either classically tied or as a parachute variant. Furthermore, these wonderful feathers are also widely used for larger fly patterns such as streamers, sea trout flies, salmon flies and pike flies.
