A whole range of dry fly patterns such as mayflies or dragonflies and terrestrials such as grasshoppers have extended bodies as a special feature. These can be produced directly on the artificial fly or separately and then integrated. With the DB TOOLS, Stonfo presents a very elegant solution for tying these detached bodies.
The two tools included in the scope of delivery differ only in terms of their material thickness but are identical in terms of their functional principle and application. They are clamped horizontally to the fly-tying vise at the U-shaped bend in the middle of the stainless-steel wire. At one end there is a spiral spring that holds the end of the tying thread so that the thread can be guided parallel to the tool. At the other end, the wire of the tool is hollow so that a piece of nylon line can be inserted there, which then serves as a core for particularly fine and filigree fly bodies.
The DB TOOLS allow you to make extended bodies in two different ways:
1. by default, you use the wire as a support for the tying material from which you make the body of your artificial fly and wrap it with the tying thread that you have previously fixed in the spiral spring and led along the wire to the rear end. If the length and shape of the body meet your expectations, fix it with an end knot and pull it off the DB TOOL. By pulling on the end of the tying thread, which was previously fixed in the spiral spring, you can also give the fly body a slight curvature so that it looks even more lifelike.
2. for particularly fine and filigree "extended bodies" you can insert a piece of nylon line at the hollow end of the stainless-steel wire, which serves as the base of the fly body. Tie the thin fly body directly on the nylon line either with the tying thread only or with some additional fine fibres. Again, tie off the body as soon as it matches the length and shape of the artificial fly, pull it out of the hollow wire on the piece of nylon and now tie it directly onto your fly. A nylon line with a maximum diameter of 0.30 mm fits into the stronger of the two DB TOOLS.
The DB TOOLS are clever little helpers that make the separate production of extended fly bodies very easy. Each package contains two tools of different thicknesses, which can be used for a wide range of applications. In addition, instructions for use are also included.
