Unweighted streamers

Light-weight streamers are so catchy because they move with great liveliness

Sometimes streamer fishing calls for finesse. Light streamers are subtle, mobile, and ideal for presentations in mid-water. They mimic small baitfish, making them deadly for trout, perch, or chub. Their lighter weight allows delicate retrieves, variable stripping, or even a natural drift in the current. The effect is strikingly lifelike, which makes them a great option when fish aren’t hunting aggressively but feeding selectively. With light streamers, you’ll always have an elegant yet highly effective tool at hand.

UNWEIGHTED STREAMERS – NATURAL, VERSATILE AND HIGHLY EFFECTIVE

Unweighted streamers offer several important advantages over heavily weighted patterns. They move more naturally through the water and, thanks to their subtle rise-and-fall action, can be presented in a far more lifelike manner. That's why classic unweighted or only lightly weighted streamers, such as the famous Muddler Minnow, remain as popular as ever.

These streamers can be fished very effectively at a wide range of depths. When used with a floating fly line in slow or shallow water, they fish right in the surface film or just a few centimetres below it, often producing surprisingly good results.

To present the fly a little deeper, simply add a small amount of tungsten paste to the leader approximately 50 cm in front of the streamer. This simple setup is remarkably effective in practice.

Another highly versatile option is the use of Cheburashka weights. These small interchangeable weights allow you to fish the streamer at greater depths without restricting its natural movement, making them ideal when you need to adapt quickly to changing water depths and conditions.

If you want to fish the entire setup deep, a sink-tip fly line (a floating line with a sinking tip) or a combination of a floating fly line and a heavy polyleader is the ideal choice.

As with most streamer fishing, presentation is everything. The more varied and lifelike your retrieve, the better your chances of success. In many situations, stripping the streamer across and slightly downstream proves especially effective. We also recommend attaching the streamer with a loop knot (e.g. a Rapala Knot or Perfection Loop), allowing it to move even more freely and naturally in the water.
