MUSKRAT DUBBING

FINE MUSKRAT UNDERFUR FOR DRY FLY TYING

MUSKRAT DUBBING is a natural dubbing made from the soft underfur of muskrat. Its fine fibres and natural water resistance make it particularly suitable for tying dry flies, especially when you want to create lightweight, well-proportioned bodies without adding unnecessary bulk to the fly.

The exceptionally fine underfur allows you to apply MUSKRAT DUBBING to the tying thread in even the smallest amounts. This makes it an excellent choice for small dry flies, including ant patterns, where precise control over the thickness of individual body sections is essential. The grey shade is also a classic choice for tying the body of the Adams, one of the best-known dry fly patterns. The other available colours offer the same tying properties for a wide range of additional patterns.

FINE FIBRES WITH A NATURALLY IRREGULAR TEXTURE

MUSKRAT DUBBING contains fibres of varying lengths. The finest underfur forms a relatively compact base, while some slightly longer hairs remain exposed on the surface. Rather than producing a completely smooth, uniform body, this creates a subtly fuzzy, natural-looking profile.

You can easily control this effect by adjusting the amount of material used. A very small quantity produces slim, neatly defined bodies, while adding a little more dubbing brings out the longer fibres. This is particularly useful for emerger thoraxes and other areas where a slightly more textured profile is desirable.

EASY TO APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE TYING THREAD

Thanks to its softness, MUSKRAT DUBBING is easy to apply directly to the tying thread and does not necessarily require dubbing wax. By working a small amount between your fingers, you can form a very fine, even dubbing noodle, gradually adding more material only where extra volume is needed.

If you prefer using wax, a minimal amount of lightly tacky dubbing wax is sufficient. The fine fibres grip the thread readily and can be distributed evenly without having to twist them into an excessively tight noodle. This level of control makes the material particularly enjoyable to work with when tying small, delicate patterns.

ALSO SUITABLE FOR DUBBING LOOPS

MUSKRAT DUBBING can also be used in a dubbing loop. By distributing the material inside the loop and twisting it to secure the fibres, you create a dubbing rope that leaves the different fibre lengths more exposed. Wrapping it around the hook shank allows you to build bodies with visible segmentation between the turns or more open, textured thoraxes with some fibres extending beyond the surface.

This technique expands the material's versatility while preserving its defining qualities: a fine, soft and lightweight texture. MUSKRAT DUBBING therefore remains primarily a material for dry flies and small surface patterns, but it is also an excellent option for emerger thoraxes when a slightly fuzzier silhouette is required.

A CLASSIC NATURAL DUBBING FOR WELL-PROPORTIONED BODIES

Muskrat underfur has long been used in traditional dry fly patterns thanks to its combination of fine texture, softness and natural water resistance. MUSKRAT DUBBING lets you take advantage of these properties for both extremely slim bodies and slightly fuller sections, simply by adjusting the amount of material and the tying technique.

MUSKRAT DUBBING is produced in Italy to hotfly specifications.
