The right fishing weight is a factor that should not be underestimated if you want to be successful with sabiki fishing. Here you can buy fishing weights, that are ideally suited to the various styles of sabiki fishing. By the way, we also have several fishing weights in a lead-free version. These non-toxic fishing weights made of a lead-free metal alloy are harmless to the environment.

WHICH FISHING LEAD FOR WHICH METHOD?

A sinker is much more than just a simple weight. Depending on your preferred method of fishing with the sabiki, it is important to:

  • be able to cast your sabiki rig at the desired distance. And to fish where the fish are.
  • bring your sabiki to the desired depth. In most cases you will be fishing close to the bottom.
  • keep your sabiki in place.
  • create enough resistance so that the fish hook themselves.
  • disturb as little as possible when guiding, retrieving, or playing the fish.

To meet all these requirements, the shape of the fishing lead is decisive, in addition to the different heaviness.

JUMPING JACK FISHING WEIGHT

The jumping jack fishing weight, also known as bouncing betty fishing weight, with its elongated, slender shape and air-filled plastic tube has some advantages over other fishing leads:

  • It is streamlined and can be cast very far.
  • The buoyancy causes it to sink slower than equal weighted sinkers.
  • It always sinks tip first. The rear part remains upright. This means that there is much less snagging on the bottom when retrieving.

These properties are particularly useful for the fishing method named after this particular sinker: the jumping jack rig. You can also find the catchiest nymphs for this incredibly catchy fishing technique in our online shop.

The jumping jack weight is also used for sabiki fishing the twaite shad (agone, sarda). Long casts are not only possible because of the slim shape. You can also choose heavier weights to throw your sabiki at greater distances. As the jumping jack doesn't sink so quickly, you can present the nymphs just below the surface. Exactly where the fish are. We have put together for you the best sabiki rigs for you for this type of fishing.

PEAR SINKERS

The more compact pear-shaped fishing weights also have their own specific advantages. When sabiki fishing, they are primarily used togheter with a float. The pear-shaped fishing weight is easy to cast and sinks fast. This means you can quickly bring your sabiki up to depth. Most importantly, this fishing lead keeps your sabiki exactly where you want it. When the fish gets the nymph, it hooks itself due to the resistance of the lead. Therefore, you should not choose too light a weight for this method. Special floats like the Original Renkenfinder need a minimum weight to work optimally. We have had the best experience with 30 to 40 grams.

It's a different story with the supreme discipline of sabiki fishing, the lifting or jigging method. Here very light, compact sinkers are used, which only have the task of bringing the sabiki to the desired depth and tensioning the fishing line very lightly. This way you can feel even the slightest tug and immediately quit it with a strike.
