ALVAREZ FLIES

THE PIONEER OF 3D-PRINTED FLIES

Bernhard Alvarez, founder of ALVAREZ FLIES, came to 3D printing by chance when he discovered how models for stage sets were printed using this then still relatively new technology. He recognised the potential of 3D printing and was fascinated by the almost unlimited possibilities of this technology. He was particularly interested in using this production technology for his passion, fly fishing. After initial experiments and many attempts, he finally succeeded in realising his idea: 3D-printed fly patterns.

However, getting there was not easy. Alvarez invested a lot of time in optimising 3D modelling and material science. He experimented with different printing materials such as silicones and resins to create flies that were not only realistic but also functional. His growing expertise allowed him to realise ever more detailed and complex designs, which soon turned out to be extremely realistic replicas of natural models. Just as important as the aesthetic component for successful production on a larger scale was, of course, the reproducibility, which makes it possible to produce exact copies of a successful and catchy pattern.

The flies from ALVAREZ FLIES are characterised by many advantages: They are delicate and flexible, which improves presentation in the water. 3D printing makes it possible to create innovative textures and complex structures that provide a realistic imitation of insects and thus increase the chances of catching fish with them. Thanks to the flexibility of 3D printing, Alvarez can continuously test and optimise new designs. Very innovative materials are now also being used, for example to imitate a phosphorescent firefly, which attracts the attention of fish with its glowing abdomen, especially at dusk - an innovation that shows how far 3D printing can be used to produce new fly patterns.

These flies also offer outstanding durability. Materials such as silicone are particularly robust and allow the flies to be used for a long time without wearing out quickly. At the same time, the legs and antennae are flexible enough to move realistically in the water and imitate a living insect.
